Student Service Learning Reflection

GGS Connect Overview

GGS Connect is the SCSA endorsed Community service program completed by Year 10 students, with additional opportunities available for Year 11’s and 12’s to complete this SCSA endorsed course. To achieve endorsement, you need to complete 50 hours of service and 5 hours of induction/reflection over the course of the year. Structured service learning is completed in Year 10 across a Semester (25-35 hours). To manage load, it is recommended students complete a portion of the required hours (15-25 hours) in the alternative semester or during the school breaks. Look out for the Community Service logo during your GROW program as, you can count this hour towards your Community Service hours – under ‘induction’. Your journal needs to be fully completed by the end of Term 4 (WK 6).

School Based Service

Guildford Grammar School provides a wide range of service opportunities to support and enhance your personal development.
Consider the impact, skills gained, or meaningful moments that made it a rewarding experience.
You may include difficulties such as time management, teamwork, unexpected obstacles, or any other factors that made the experience challenging.
Provide examples of how your contributions made a positive impact, whether on the school community, your personal development, or others involved.

Community Based Service

Our community goes beyond the school gates and beyond our family at home. It is the global village where we live alongside each other as neighbours and partners. We have rights and responsibilities within our community to ensure all humans are respected and treated fairly and equally. This part of your community service program encourages you to become an active participant in the broader community, through practical involvement in a range of activities. In turn this will help increase your awareness and appreciation of those around you.

Character Values Reflection

Consider the ‘character values and skills’ wheel below. For each section, mark how you feel the service opportunity allowed you to demonstrate those values/skills.

Service Learning Wheel

Pick 3 of the effectives that you might have wanted to be a higher number. What would you have to do to increase the number?

Example: For the section ‘Communication’ I feel I was a 5 on my service-learning rotation. Ideally, I would have been an 8. If I were doing this again, I would try to have a conversation each week with a person who I had not met before. It might have helped me to have prepared an opening question each week, so I had something to ask. “Do you have any hobbies?”

Pick 2 of the effectives which were high scores and reflect on what you did to feel you did well in that area.

Example: For the section ‘Initiative’ I marked myself an 8 for initiative. Each week I would do the tasks allocated and then if I finished them, I would offer to do something extra.

Consider reflecting on the skills you’ve developed, the connections you’ve made, and any personal growth or insights you’ve gained through your community service involvement.

Reflection of the GGS Connect Program

Share your thoughts on how helping others contributes to the community and why you believe it is valuable to give back.
Consider how helping others impacted you personally, the connections you made, or the sense of fulfillment you gained from your service.
This could include obstacles such as time constraints, communication issues, or any other difficulties that made the experience challenging.
Consider personal growth, new skills, or insights that you gained during the experience.
Reflect on qualities such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, or communication that helped you succeed throughout the program.

Identify three ways you might continue to give back to your community/serve people in the future.
